Many organizations fail to monitor their policies and may suffer unexpected losses of policy value that could have been easily prevented. With active management, charities can avoid these losses and help ensure that the donor’s charitable aims are achieved. This presentation shows charitable organizations how to periodically review and manage a portfolio of donated life insurance policies. A suggested review checklist, methods for obtaining current information, guidance on policy decision-making, and a discussion of management options for dealing with problem policies will be discussed.
Recommendations for avoiding problems through sound gift acceptance practices are also discussed. Contains information covered in Syllabus Sections: 2.00, 4.00

Presenter: Philip M. Purcell is the vice president for planned giving and endowment resources at the Ball State University Foundation in Muncie Indiana.
Gift planners who work for and/or advise charities or donors as counsel need to be aware of the best practices associated with the education, cultivation, negotiation, completion, recognition and stewardship of planned gifts. Best practices assure compliance with legal and ethical standards to serve the interest of both donors and charities. Gift revenue may be increased for charities while tax and other benefits can be maximized for donors at reduced risk of legal or ethical violations. This session will explore the most important elements in creating effective gift planning policies and procedures. It will share model policies for types of planned gifts, assets for gifts, documentation, privacy, crediting, valuing, recognition, stewardship, reporting, ethical standards and many other topics.
